About Dr. Dovala

Dr. Dovala is a Los Angeles–based psychologist (#33691) specializing in identity-affirming, evidence-based care for both individuals and couples. She enjoys helping clients to clarify their values, cultivate depth in their relationships, and foster self-understanding that catalyzes growth. She approaches clients with curiosity and acceptance as they experiment with new ways of relating to themselves and others.
Dr. Dovala holds a PhD and MA in Clinical Psychology from Clark University. She uses a strengths-based and integrative approach that is tailored to the unique needs of each client and draws from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and interpersonal modalities. Dr. Dovala takes an active approach to therapy that invites clients to approach their own life with deeper engagement and new possibility. Past clients have described her as genuine, nonjudgmental, and perceptive.
Dr. Dovala is dedicated to racial and social justice and prioritizes appreciation of each person’s unique cultural context. She specializes in providing LGBTQIA+ and culturally-affirming care to both individuals and couples. Dr. Dovala has a special interest in supporting other healthcare professionals, including residents, fellows, and mental health providers. She previously served on the Trans Care Team and LGBTQ+ Mental Health Team at UCLA, and has pioneered research on one of the first couples therapy interventions specifically tailored to the unique strengths and stressors that LGBTQ+ couples may experience. She continues to focus her practice on providing affirming care to clients with diverse gender identities, sexual orientations, and relationship practices.
